English translation and transliteration of Urdu Ghazal
Translated by: Muhammad Iqbal Irshad
غزل (کہاں سے آیا کہاں گیا وہ، نا جانے وہ تھا کہ وہم تھا وہ)
Kahān se āya Kahān gayā wo,
na jāney wo tha keh wehm thā wo
Kahān tha khōya, Kahān milā wo,
na jāney wo tha keh wehm thā wo
From where did he come, to where did he go,
it is not known as he was or it was an illusion.
Where had he lost, where had he met,
it is not known as he was or it was an illusion.
Wo mairay itney qarēb tha per
mujhey na ehsās tha zarā bhi
Keh jab talak nā çalā gaya wo,
na jāney wo tha keh wehm thā wo
He was near to me without any measure of distance but
I miserably failed to capture such a sensitive reality,
until he has not departed;
it is not known as he was or it was an illusion.
Ye kab se ehsās aa gaya hay,
wo ānsuōn mein çhalak rahā hay
Dirēna ik rāz ab khulā wo,
na jāney wo tha keh wehm thā wo
Where did he creep into my vision
that he is ceaselessly flowing through my tears,
A secret stayed beside me for long and I have realized now (when it is too late),
it is not known he was or it was an illusion.
Pukārta hō main barg-o-gül mein,
usay main sehrā ke dil ke andar
Magar bohat door ja çukā wo,
na jāney wo tha keh wehm thā wo
I cherish to call him in trees and roses
and in the heart of the desert (or dissert of my heart),
But he has disappeared beyond sight,
it is not known as he was or it was his illusion.
Mukarram ab kyā sambhal sakey gā,
tera hazēn dil keh çhor kar wo
Tujhey akailā, huwa judā wo,
na jāney wo tha keh wehm thā wo
Mukarram! Your grieved heart will now find no consolation
as he left you (alone) in the irretrievable pangs;
it is not known as he was or it was an illusion.
